Norman Geras isn’t a smoker, and nor am I, but he has a problem with the Guidance for a smoke-free NHS which states that “Staff cannot smoke in buildings (or grounds) owned by the Trust, (or in leased cars belonging to the Trust) or when they are on Trust duty”. It advises other staff to report incidents to the person’s line manager. Norman says:
Wonderful: make a note; report the incident. Otherwise put: denounce the evildoer. And: not in the buildings, not in the cars, not in the grounds; damn it, don’t come to work at all if you’ve had a smoke, unless you’ve been hosed down first and had your mouth washed out.
He also mentioned smoking shelters, so I thought I’d show you an NHS smoking shelter from a large inner city teaching hospital (modelled anonymously by a smoking work colleague, who I have yet to denounce to the authorities).
